Seasonal Load Restrictions Go Into Effect Friday

Heavy load restrictions will come into effect for the City of Thunder Bay beginning at 8 am on Friday, March 15.
During the spring thaw period, some roads cannot withstand heavy vehicle loads. Every year, the City monitors thaw progression by using forecast temperature data to calculate the Thaw Index. When the Thaw Index reaches its threshold value, the load restrictions are imposed. Once the pavement strength has been restored, the load restrictions are lifted.

Traffic Study Taking Place at Proposed Roundabout Location

The City’s Engineering Division will be undertaking a traffic study in the area of the proposed roundabout on Victoria Avenue. The intent of the study is to determine the requirements for traffic control at the Victoria Avenue and Lillie Street intersection, and/or the Victoria Avenue and Ford Street intersection.

Phase two of the Main Street Bridge rehabilitation will commence on Monday, March 4.
The Main Street Bridge, located between Isabel Street and Hammond Avenue, is undergoing rehabilitation to improve and repair key elements of the structure in order to increase its lifespan and provide a reliable and safe means of transportation for years to come.

The City’s Roads Section is working hard to manage winter control conditions. All resources are currently cleaning up from the winter event on Monday and will be preparing for the upcoming forecasted snowfall.

Public Invited to Education Sessions on Roundabouts

The City of Thunder Bay is hosting two Public Education Sessions regarding roundabouts in Thunder Bay. The Session will outline how to use a roundabout, the benefits of roundabouts and give citizens an opportunity to ask questions, share their views and provide comments.
A roundabout is a circular intersection designed to maximize safety, minimize delay and decrease fuel consumption. There are no traffic lights or stop signs at a roundabout.
