Christmas Tree drop-off sites open on Boxing Day

Each year, the City of Thunder Bay offers a Christmas tree chipping program from Boxing Day to Jan. 12.
Fresh-cut Christmas trees can be dropped off at several locations across the city, where they will be collected, chipped and brought to the compost site at the City's landfill. In the spring, when the compost is mature, the City provides the compost to residents - free - to enrich flower gardens and lawns.

Solid Waste and Recycling Facility Holiday Hours

The operating hours of the City of Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Facility (the landfill) will change during the holiday season, effective Dec. 23, 2024 until Jan. 2, 2025. The holiday hours are:
Monday, Dec. 23 - 8:00 am - 6:30 pm
Tuesday, Dec. 24 - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Wednesday, Dec. 25 - CLOSED
Thursday, Dec. 26 - CLOSED
Friday, Dec. 27 - 8:00 am - 6:30 pm
Saturday, Dec. 28 - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
Sunday, Dec. 29 - CLOSED
Monday, Dec. 30 - 8:00 am - 6:30 pm
Tuesday, Dec. 31 - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Due to the statutory holidays on Dec. 25 and 26, 2024 and Jan. 1, 2025, dates for commercial and residential waste collection will change. Effective Dec. 23, 2024 until Jan. 2, 2025, please see changes below:

HO HO HOLD the Waste - Holiday Waste Reduction Contest

To encourage waste reduction during the festive season, Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Services is pleased to announce its 2024 “Ho Ho Hold the Waste” Holiday Waste Reduction Contest, which invites local residents to show their creative and sustainable ways of reducing the amount of waste they produce during the holidays.

Students from Confederation College's post-graduate Health Informatics program showcased their capstone research projects today, sharing health indicator findings that will inform the City of Thunder Bay’s next Community Safety and Well-Being Plan.
The Health Informatics students collected data on health indicators related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) and, in small groups, validated and updated that data from a 2022 Thunder Bay Voluntary Local Review (VLR) of the SDGs.
