Chapples Sliding Hill Being Relocated

Beginning today, the sliding hill beside the outdoor tennis courts at Chapples will close and be relocated in preparation for construction of the new indoor tennis facility.

During the month of January, construction crews will move the soil from the existing hill to a new location south of Chapples Drive and west of the overflow parking lot. The work is expected to take the entire month of January. Extra Item of Garbage Allowed After New Year’s Day 2023

Due to the increase of waste during the holiday season, the City will allow households a third item of garbage at the curb, without a tag, on the first collection date after New Year’s Day.

Wrapping paper cannot be recycled because of its high ink content and must be thrown away. Wherever possible, residents are reminded to reduce household waste by using the six R’s:

  • Rethink: Think about waste before you buy. Avoid ‘disposable’ products.
  • Refuse: Say no to plastic bags in stores – bring your own...

Outdoor Supervised Boarded Rinks Now Open

The City’s supervised boarded outdoor rinks are now open for public skating.

Some of the unsupervised boarded rinks are open as well, while others require further flooding and maintenance prior to officially opening – check local signage.

Skating is permitted when rinks are closed, at the user’s discretion.

Unboarded skating ponds are still being prepared, pending weather conditions. Residents are reminded that throughout the season, ice conditions change with the weather and can result in short-notice...

City’s New Electric Ice Resurfacer Hits the Ice

The City of Thunder Bay introduced its first fully electric, zero emissions ice resurfacer today at the Fort William Gardens.

The Ice Wolf Electric Ice Resurfacer is an emissions-free unit that will eliminate 7.78 tonnes of CO2e emissions annually, providing cleaner air for athletes on the ice, spectators in the stands, and employees operating the unit. The unit is expected to save approx. $4000 in maintenance and energy cost from fuel switching propane to electricity.

Christmas Tree Drop-Off Sites Open Boxing Day 2022

Each year, the City of Thunder Bay offers a Christmas tree chipping program from Boxing Day to January 12.

Fresh-cut Christmas trees can be dropped off at several locations across the city, where they will be collected, chipped and added to the compost pile at the City's landfill. In the spring, when the compost is mature, it is provided to residents free of charge to enrich flower gardens and lawns.
