Holiday Waste and Recycling Collection Changes

Garbage and recycling collection dates for all residents and businesses will change for the weeks of Dec. 21 and Dec. 28, as there is no collection on Friday, Dec. 25, 2020 or Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.

Calendar Parking Begins December 18 on Residential Streets

The Calendar parking restrictions for residential streets begin this Friday, Dec. 18.

The City of Thunder Bay institutes calendar parking during the winter months to allow plows to clear local streets more efficiently and effectively. Calendar parking ensures that when the plow arrives, at least one side of the street is clear of parked cars, allowing the plow to clear one side per day.

Outdoor Burning Hours to be Extended

Starting on Dec. 17, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue will extend the outdoor burning hours from 12 pm to 12am daily until May 1, 2021. The current outdoor burning hours are 5 pm to 12 am daily.

“The outdoor burning hours were extended to allow families to enjoy time outside during the day while it is still light out,” said Fire Chief Greg Hankkio. “Outdoor burning permits are still required, and all permit rules and regulations still apply.”

Santa Bus Food Drive Cancelled

The Annual ATU Local 966 and City of Thunder Bay Santa Bus food drive has been cancelled this year due to COVID restrictions.

“We would like to thank the community for their support over the last 25 years, and we hope to return with this annual event in 2021,” said Ken Koza, Amalgamated Transit Union 966 President. “We wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season and a happy new year.”

He added that residents should instead consider donating directly to the Thunder Bay Food Bank if they are able.

MECG Discusses Vaccine Rollout and Continued Vigilance

The City’s Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) met today with community partners as part of its ongoing management of the COVID-19 situation. They discussed ongoing efforts to manage the virus with Thunder Bay expected to remain for now in the Province’s Orange Restrict (intermediate measures) category. The Orange category of the Province’s COVID-19 Response Framework is outlined by the Province as “enhanced measures, restrictions and enforcement, avoiding any closures.”
