New Rules in Effect for Skating at Outdoor City Rinks and Ponds

In cooperation with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, the City is releasing new rules and restrictions for outdoor skating at City rinks and ponds that go into effect today.

The additional rules include:

  • No nets allowed (nets will be removed from all rinks).
  • No games allowed including “shinny/scrub”.
  • Sticks and pucks are allowed for individual or family use only.
  • Capacity limits will now be posted at rinks, with a limit of 25 individuals per boarded rink.

The Province of Ontario is now in a second provincial emergency and a stay-at-home order is in effect until at least Thursday, Feb. 11. The public is reminded to stay off all natural ice surfaces as they may be unsafe, including the ice at Boulevard Lake.

“Members of the public may be curious about the dam construction at Boulevard Lake,” said Mike Vogrig, City of Thunder Bay Project Engineer. “However, ice on Boulevard Lake is not safe for pedestrians.
