Curbside Battery Collection Program Cancelled

Batteries can still be recycled at designated drop-off locations, however, the curbside battery collection program has been cancelled going forward. 

“This program proved to be very successful,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste and Recycling Services. “We encourage residents to continue with the momentum and recycle their spent batteries. It is important to keep the batteries from going to the landfill, as batteries can release potentially toxic materials.”

Section of Walsh Street Closed Due to Traffic Accident

Walsh Street, from Neebing Avenue to Beaverhall Place, is closed due to downed wires caused by a traffic accident. There will be no emergency access. 

There will also be no access to Commerce Street from Walsh Street to allow crews to repair the downed wires. 

Those travelling near the construction zone are asked to use extra caution and obey all posted signage.

New City Clerk Selected

Following an extensive search and hiring process, City Manager Norm Gale is pleased to announce that Krista Power will be appointed as the fifth City Clerk for the City of Thunder Bay.

City to Host Forest Fire Evacuees from Pikangikum First Nation

The City of Thunder Bay is preparing to receive approximately 300 people from Pikangikum First Nation over the course of the next 48 hours as the community reported that they require immediate evacuation of their vulnerable population due to heavy smoke impacting the community and affecting public health and wellness.

The city will also serve as a transportation hub to assist with travel to other host communities across Ontario.

2019 Road Work Season Underway

The City of Thunder Bay is investing $30 million in 2019 on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.

This month marks the start of a busy road work season in Thunder Bay, and road work can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. All residents are reminded to reduce their speed, be alert, watch for workers, and drive with extra care in construction zones.
