Returning Officer Certifies Candidates for 2022 Election

Returning Officer Krista Power has officially certified the candidates for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Election. The French School Board saw most candidates receiving acclamation to office, and the French Separate School Board had an extension of the nomination deadline.

Section of High Street Will Be Closed Starting Monday

High Street South, between Lisgar Street and Queen Street, will be closed starting on Monday, August 22. The closure is necessary to allow for watermain, sidewalk and road work. The work is expected to take up to 10 weeks to complete. 

Street access is allowed for local traffic only. Detour signs will be posted.

Drivers are asked to use extra caution and obey all posted signage when travelling near the construction area.

Landfill Site Closed Today Due to Waste Pile Fire

The City’s Solid Waste & Recycling Facility (the Landfill) is closed today due to a fire located in a waste pile at the main public tipping face. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is currently on-site and the fire is under control. 

The City’s Solid Waste & Recycling Services, along with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, will be monitoring the issue throughout the day.

 The issue will be reassessed at the end of the day, with hopes of reopening the site tomorrow.

Resurfacing Work to Begin on Section of Arthur Street West

Resurfacing work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Aug. 10 on a section of Arthur Street West between Vanguard Avenue and Parkdale Boulevard. The work will take approximately two days to complete.

The roadway will be reduced to one lane to accommodate the resurfacing work. Flag personnel will direct alternating traffic.

Motorists are asked to proceed with caution through the road work area.

Deterioration Causes Chippewa’s Carousel to Close Earlier in Season

Chippewa Park’s carousel ride will close a few weeks early due to signs of deterioration to the newly restored carousel horses.

“Due to the current stage of the restoration project, the carousel had to operate without the canopy installed this year,” said Cory Halvorsen, Manager of Parks & Open Spaces. “Since the restored horses were designed to withstand outdoor conditions, we decided to operate the ride this year on the condition that it would be monitored for signs of environmental impacts.”
