Busy Road Work Season Under Way

The City of Thunder Bay is investing $32 million in 2021 on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.

The 2021 road work season is under way. Road work can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. All local motorists, cyclists and pedestrian are reminded to be alert, watch for workers and drive with extra care in construction zones.

City Prepares Services to Reopen in Step Three

The Ontario government has given orders to move into the third stage of the Roadmap to Reopening on Friday, July 16, at 12:01 am as key public health and health care indicators continue to improve, and the province-wide vaccination rates surpass targets.

Red River Road Westbound Closed from Hill Street to Rupert Street

Due to a necessary emergency service repair, the westbound lanes of Red River Road have been closed from Hill Street to Rupert Street. Eastbound traffic from Rupert Street to Hill Street will be reduced to one lane (outside lane only). Repairs are expected to be complete by the end of the day.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution in the area of the road closure.

City to Host Additional Evacuees from Deer Lake First Nation

The City of Thunder Bay will welcome 101 evacuees from Deer Lake First Nation which is currently under threat from a 27,549 hectare fire, RED 051, burning 15 km away from Deer Lake and growing in size due to weather conditions.

The 101 people, who are considered stage one primary evacuees – members of the community’s vulnerable population, are anticipated to arrive this afternoon. The remaining vulnerable population, approximately 350 people, will be evacuated to other communities in the province.

City to Host Poplar Hill First Nation Forest Fire Evacuees

The City of Thunder Bay is preparing to receive evacuees from Poplar Hill First Nation today due to the close proximity of the 350 hectare forest fire, RED065, which began on July 5, and is currently burning 10 km west of the community and poses an immediate threat to public safety.
