Public Invited to ‘Try Out the Roundabout’ Prior to Official Opening

Prior to the expected opening of the Edward St. and Redwood Ave. roundabout this weekend, the City is hosting a pop-up education event on Sept. 24 from 1-3 pm for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to learn firsthand the ins and outs of roundabouts.

City staff will be on site near the roundabout in the Northwood Mall parking lot where they will share an educational video and answer questions about how roundabouts are designed to maximize safety, minimize delay and decrease fuel consumption.

Season Opening Delayed at Delaney Arena

Sept. 22, 2021 – Seasonal reopening of Delaney Arena has been deferred to Wednesday, Sept. 29 due to an unexpected mechanical issue.  The arena was originally scheduled to open for the season on Sunday, Sept. 26.

Ice times booked at Delaney Arena for Sept. 26 to Sept. 28 have been cancelled or rescheduled, and contract holders have been notified.

Port Arthur and Current River arenas remain open. Grandview and Neebing arenas will open Sept. 26 as planned.

Proof of Vaccination Required at City Indoor Recreation Facilities

September 21, 2021 – Starting Wednesday, September 22, in accordance with Ontario Regulation 645/21, patrons entering the City’s indoor recreation facilities are required to provide their vaccination receipt or medical exemption alongside government-issued identification to access certain indoor recreation facilities, programs and services.  This requirement is in addition to existing active screening procedures.

City Participating in Greener Lignin-Based Asphalt Trial

The City of Thunder Bay will be the first location in Ontario to trial a new lignin-based asphalt. Lignin is a by-product of the forestry industry and will result in a greener, more environmentally-friendly alternative to the asphalt currently used.

FPInnovations is spearheading the trial. The first trial of the lignin-based asphalt in Canada took place this summer in Sturgeon County, Alberta, and was deemed successful.
