Property tax is a levy based on the assessed value of the property. It has two components: a municipal portion and an education portion.
The rates for the municipal portion of the tax are established by the City of Thunder Bay. The City levies municipal property taxes in accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001 to fund services that contribute to health, safety and quality of life such as roads, parks, emergency services, recreation & culture, planning, long term care and senior services.
The rates for the education portion of the tax are established by the Minister of Finance and help to fund the elementary and secondary education system in Ontario. Education rates are set in Ontario Regulation 400/98 under the Education Act.
The Revenue Division is responsible for the billing and collection of property taxes as well as water revenue, general accounts receivable, court services and revenue payment processing.
