Questions about Careers with the City of Thunder Bay
Do I need to know someone to get a job with the City of Thunder Bay?
No, the City of Thunder Bay uses objective shortlisting criteria, which are drawn directly from the job description for the advertised position.
Applications must meet the education and experience requirements to continue to the second stage of shortlisting. Only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
Reviewing the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) documents on our Careers page will provide you insight into the education, experience and KSAs required for positions you are interested in. It is never too early to start working towards the requirements for your desired job.
Are all City jobs posted for the public?
All vacancies are posted unless otherwise approved by the Executive Management Team in accordance with Corporate procedure HR-01-22 (Job Postings). However, some positions in accordance with Collective Agreements are posted internal only.
I have heard you need seniority to get certain jobs with the City of Thunder. How do you gain seniority if you can’t even apply?
Some positions that fall within certain bargaining units* and groups at the City of Thunder Bay award positions to the most senior qualified applicant if they meet the education and experience requirements for the position. These positions are typically posted internally first. Should no qualified applicant be found internal to the bargaining unit, the position would then be posted external to the public.
We encourage candidates to apply for temporary and/or entry level positions, as this is a starting point to gain seniority and be eligible to apply on other positions within the bargaining unit.
*A bargaining unit is a group of positions and employees represented by a single labour union in collective bargaining.
What is a general resume?

- Any additional sections for your education, training, memberships, and affiliations, etc., that may be important to include.
Also, make sure to provide job specific information relevant to the position you are applying. Use the job specific cover letter and additional details fields on your profile page.
