May 31, 2017 - The City of Thunder Bay Archives will be celebrating International Archives Day on Friday, June 9, with an Open House and public tours. Residents are invited to visit the City Archives to take a behind the scenes tour of the facility, see the newly renovated public research area, explore the collection and view an onsite exhibit. Staff will also be on hand to answer questions about using archival records for research.

"This year's Open House theme will be Archives, Citizenship and Interculturalism," said Matt Szybalski, Corporate Records Manager and City Archivist. "We encourage residents to stop in to view the artifacts and records on display from the Sister Cities Program and to find out more about our facility and how the collections can assist with historical research."

The Open House will be held Friday, June 9, from 8:30 - 4:30 pm, at the City Archives - 235 Vickers Street N. Tours will be available all day, with the last tour offered at 3:30 pm.

This event is part of the City Archives' public engagement program which also includes online exhibits available at www.thunderbay.ca/archives, a Flickr photo gallery at www.flickr.com/thunderbayarchives and online discussions through social media.

International Archives Day was created by the International Council on Archives to raise awareness about the importance of archives. Each year on June 9, professionals all around the world unite their voices and host events in historical institutions to help the public understand why it is important to support archives and the profession. International Archives Day provides an opportunity for the public to discover and better know their local archives.
