The City encourages residents to show their support and appreciation for their neighbourhood Crossing Guards during Crossing Guard Appreciation WeekJune 5 - 9, 2023. Recognize the dedicated individuals across our city who assist young residents with their safe daily commutes to and from school.

“Crossing Guard Appreciation Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and invaluable service provided by our local Crossing Guards,” said Michelle Reimer, Crossing Guard Supervisor. “We extend our gratitude to them for nurturing a culture of safety in our community, one safe crossing at a time.”

Support your local School Crossing Guards and help maintain safety by:

  • Stop when a School Crossing Guard raises their stop sign
  • Take notice of whether a Guard is on duty and slow down when approaching school crossing locations
  • Obey the law. Remain stopped until all children AND the Guard have completely exited the roadway
  • Proceed with caution, obey posted speed limits, and observe all “No Stopping” and “No Parking” sign, and park in designated areas only

  • The City currently employs 55 school crossing guards
  • The City is has available positions for Crossing Guards
  • As of Jan. 1, 2016, all vehicles and cyclists are required by the Ontario Highway Traffic Act to stop and wait until children and Crossing Guards have cleared the entire roadway at school crossings before proceeding
