Thunder Bay City Council has declared the third Saturday in June to be Neighbour Day each year. Thunder Bay’s first Neighbour Day is set for Saturday, June 20.

Neighbour Day is an opportunity for neighbours to connect and celebrate. This year’s event also serves as a chance to celebrate the City of Thunder Bay’s 50th anniversary. Neighbour Day has been held in cities around the world. Calgary, Leduc, Kelowna and Kitchener are some of the

Canadian communities that host annual Neighbour Day activities.

“Neighbour Day helps to build a strong and caring community by bringing neighbours together,” said Mayor Bill Mauro. “I would like to wish everyone a Happy Neighbour Day and encourage all of our citizens to connect with their neighbours and celebrate our unique and diverse neighbourhoods.”

Neighbour Day-themed instructional art videos created by the Community Arts & Heritage Education Project (CAHEP) will be available shortly on the on the Neighbour Day Facebook page and website. Citizens are encouraged to display their creations and share on social media using #thanksneighbour.

Activity ideas in the Neighbour Day Toolkit located at www.thunderbay.ca/neighbourday include:

  • send a Neighbour Day card  to say thank you to a neighbour or brighten someone’s day
  • complete a colouring page located in the kids zone section and post the child’s completed work with #thanksneighbour or tag with Neighbour Day Thunder Bay on Facebook for a chance to win a prize
  • decorate windows, doors or yards in a common neighbourhood theme such as “thank you neighbours”
  • host a driveway dance party or concert where neighbours can listen to music together while remaining a safe distance apart

Physical distancing and safety standards are very important to remember when planning Neighbour Day activities. Gatherings of up to 10 people are acceptable but physical distancing or masks are still required to help keep neighbours safe.
