January 5, 2016 - Amendments to the Highway Traffic Act affecting pedestrian crossovers came into effect on January 1 as part of Bill 31 - Making Ontario's Roads Safer.

Under the new regulations, drivers, including cyclists, must remain stopped at a pedestrian crossover or school crossing until the person crossing the street or the school crossing guard is completely off the roadway.

"This will enhance the safety of our schoolchildren and crossing guards," said Michelle Riemer, Field Supervisor of Crossing Guards. "Most motorists were already courteous, but the new laws make it clear that safety comes first."

"Previously, drivers were allowed to proceed once the person crossing or the school crossing guard was no longer in the driver's half of the roadway."

Other amendments to the Highway Traffic Act consolidate and clarify the duties of drivers and pedestrians at pedestrian crossovers. Drivers must come to a full stop when a pedestrian is in the crossover, and must not overtake another vehicle already stopped there. Pedestrians (including persons in wheelchairs) must not enter a crossover and go into the path of a vehicle that is so close that the driver cannot stop.

Drivers are encouraged to exercise maximum caution at all pedestrian crossovers, including school crossings.
