The City of Thunder Bay is excited to host virtual programming this year in celebration of National Youth Week and Youth Arts Week from May 1 to May 7. The Recreation and Culture Division, along with other community partners, has arranged different activities for youth ages 12–24 to participate virtually throughout the week with a focus on well-being.All activities are free.

This year, celebrations and programming will occur virtually given the social distancing orders related to COVID-19. “The safety of our community is of utmost importance, and virtual programing allows for people to stay engaged while practicing physical distancing,” says Amanda Prien, Program Supervisor of Children, Youth & Strategic Initiatives. “We are excited to offer a great lineup to showcase talent in our community, focusing on well-being and encouraging youth to get involved while staying safe.”

Activities include a live Zumba class, virtual concerts, beading, and cupcake tutorials, to name a few. A “Self Portrait Challenge” is also part of the program, encouraging youth aged 12-24 to submit a photo of their creative self-portrait for a chance to win prizes. All mediums are welcome (drawing, cardboard, sculpture, music, photography, or using any household items available). Photos can be submitted to culture@thunderbay.ca. Entries will be posted to the Thunder Bay Culture & Events Facebook page and Instagram account. The winners will be announced live on Facebook & Instagram on Thursday, May 7, 2020 shortly after 5pm.

The Recreation & Culture Division has also curated a wide range of virtual recreation content for people of all ages to help the community stay active and creative until emergency orders have been lifted.
