Do you know a woman whose role in Thunder Bay’s history should be celebrated? The City Archives is now accepting nominations to their Women’s History Month exhibit. The exhibit was launched in 2013 to celebrate women who have made a contribution to Thunder Bay’s history. New profiles of women are added to the exhibit during Women’s History Month in October.

“Every year the variety of the contributions these women make to our life changes,” said Matt Szybalski, City Archivist. “For example last year we added writer Sheila Burnford, Sister Leila Greco, ‘Queen of the Hurricanes’ Elsie MacGill, and the West Algoma Equal Suffrage Association.”

“This year we would like to increase the diversity of the featured women with the addition of a few Indigenous Women,” said Ann Magiskan, Aboriginal Liaison. “I encourage people to write-up and nominate some of our sisters and elders.”

Submissions are due by July 1, 2019, and should include a brief biographical sketch highlighting the individual’s significance to Thunder Bay along with some images of the nominee. Copyright information or attribution notes must be included. The nominated woman’s contributions to Thunder Bay history should be significant and the facts in the biography must be true and verifiable.

The successful additions will be launched on the online exhibit this October, to coincide with the Status of Women Canada’s celebration of Women’s History Month.
