Each year in October, to coincide with Women’s History Month, new inductees are added to the City of Thunder Bay Women’s History Month online exhibit. The exhibit recognizes and celebrates women of all ages who played important roles in the history and development of our city.

The City of Thunder Bay Archives launched the Women in History online exhibit in 2013 as a means to recognize women associated with our community who have made significant contributions or outstanding accomplishments throughout a wide variety of ways. Every year, we ask the public to nominate local women to be included and celebrated within the exhibit.

“The Women’s History Month web exhibit, curated by the Archives team, is a very inspirational project to be part of. Suggestions received by the public bring to light, and allow us to share, the stories of many remarkable women,” said Laurie Abthorpe, Heritage Researcher, City of Thunder Bay Archives.

Five new inductees are being recognized in the 2021 online exhibit:

  • Rose Alice Louise Bernst, National Memorial Silver Cross Mother of 1985.
  • Jennifer Hunter, Gymnast and track and field athlete.
  • Annette Pateman, Racial and Gender Equality Advocate, Author, Poet, and Educator.
  • Grace Remus, Advocate for healthcare and women’s rights, and former council member for the City of Fort William and The City of Thunder Bay.
  • Diane Scott, Educator and innovator in distance education, and advocate for community development.

The exhibit can be viewed on our Womens History Month page. To learn more, citizens are invited to contact the City of Thunder Bay Archives at archives@thunderbay.ca
