Mother’s Day marks the opening of nominations of notable women from our city’s past to be featured on the City of Thunder Bay Archives online web exhibit for Women’s History Month in October.

The City of Thunder Bay Archives launched the Women in History online exhibit in 2013 as a means to recognize women who have contributed to the history and community of Thunder Bay. Every year, we ask for submissions from the community of local women who have made an impact to be included and celebrated within the exhibit. 

This year, as we celebrate Thunder Bay’s 50th Anniversary, we are giving special consideration to women who have made significant contributions to our city since amalgamation in 1970. 

“As we reflect upon our city’s progress and noteworthy milestones achieved over the past 50 years, we have a wonderful opportunity to highlight more recent contributions made by the women of Thunder Bay. Contributions can include, but are not limited to, those made in the arts, business, government, community life, diversity, or any other aspect of our city’s development,” said Heritage Researcher Laurie Abthorpe.

Submissions from the community are welcome, starting on Sunday, May 10, 2020, and must be submitted by July 1, 2020, in order to be considered. In order to qualify, submissions must include a brief biography highlighting the individual’s significance to Thunder Bay along with some images of the nominee. 

Submissions can be emailed to archives@thunderbay.ca. 

The successful nominees will be featured on the online exhibit this October to coincide with the Status of Women Canada’s celebration of Women’s History Month.
