November 4, 2024 – City crews are addressing a sewer overflow at Arthur and James Street that was discovered on Friday.
An undocumented, combined sewer overflow maintenance hole was found while investigating reports of a bad smell. The overflow, caused by a grease blockage in the sanitary sewer on Arthur Street, allowed sewage to enter a storm sewer and flow down to the Neebing River.
Since the discovery, City crews along with contractors have been working to clean and inspect the affected sewer systems and the storm outfall at the Neebing River. Crews will remove any sewage and debris prior to placing the storm sewer back in service.
Water quality at the Neebing River storm outfall near Riverview Drive continues to be monitored throughout the process. The situation was promptly reported to the Spills Action Center. The Ministry of the Environment, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and Lakehead Region Conservation Authority are being kept up to date on the progress.
