April 1, 2016 - The achievements and contributions of local artists, cultural professionals, organizations and businesses were celebrated at the City of Thunder Bay's annual Arts & Heritage Awards, presented by the Walleye, on Thursday evening at the Finnish Labour Temple.

This year's nominees represent a wide spectrum of Thunder Bay's cultural sector from individual artists, theater, film, music and historians to cultural business, educators, and supporters.

"Arts, culture and heritage play a vital role in our City," said Councillor Larry Hebert. "We realize how important supporting our cultural sector is and how essential this investment is to our City.  From music and dance to visual arts, new media and heritage, Thunder Bay is enriched, enlivened, and enhanced by culture."

Awards included cash prizes and original works of art by local artists Lois Nuttall and boy Roland.  The awards event also featured performances by the Damon Dowbak Trio and Greenbank.

"Heartfelt congratulations are extended to all 31 nominees and 8 winners for their amazing contributions to the local creative sector," added Hebert.

The 2015 Arts & Heritage Awards recipients included:

  • Performing & Media Arts Award - Michelle Derosier
  • Visual Arts Award - Elizabeth Buset
  • Built Heritage Award - Excuria, Chris Bernst
  • Cultural Heritage Award - Marilyn Grudniski
  • Organization Award - Chaban Ukrainian Dance Group
  • Cultural Educator Award - Sam Shahsahabi
  • Large Business Award - Red Lion Smokehouse
  • Small Business Award - Alumni Association of Lakehead University
