The City is pleased to launch a renewed area of the City of Thunder Bay website focused on Indigenous relations and inclusion to better serve residents and visitors. The web area embodies the City’s vision: Maamawe, All Together, while furthering the goals of the new Indigenous Relations & Inclusion (IRI) Strategy, which was recently approved by City Council on Nov. 23, 2020.

“The revamped webpage offers an updated and easier to navigate site for accessing information on Indigenous relations and inclusion,” said Regina Mandamin, Manager of Indigenous Relations & Inclusion (IRI). “The public will now have an improved source of information to support their own acts of reconciliation while learning more about what the City is doing to better serve and improve relations with Indigenous partners and community members.”

The newly updated web section has an area devoted to the new IRI Strategy, shares information on relationship agreements the City has with the region’s First Nation communities and other partners working towards anti-racism, provides progress reports on the Seven Youth Inquest recommendations, and shares educational resources and services provided by various City departments. It also provides descriptions and a photo gallery of Indigenous City Spaces, and introduces the City Anishinaabe Elders Council.

The new website area accompanies the recently launched Indigenous Relations & Inclusion Facebook Page which shares local events, opportunities, and information promoting inclusion and celebrating culture.

“Our web and social presence is furthering the reach and realization of our vision Maamawe- All Together, which celebrates diversity, inclusiveness, and building respectful relations,” added Mandamin. “This is also an initiative to implement Commitment 10 within our IRI Strategy: improve outreach and communications on City services. We will be holding public engagement to inform the development of the IRI Strategy’s implementation plan and invite the community to stay tuned for future updates as we embark on this exciting new chapter.”

The Indigenous Relations and Inclusion Office aims to enhance its relationship with Indigenous partners and communities, while advancing Indigenous Peoples’ inclusion in the City’s opportunities and growth. We invite you to visit the webpage and discover what the City has to offer residents and visitors to Thunder Bay.
