July 25, 2017 - The City of Thunder Bay welcomes the commitment from the Federal Minister of Health Jane Philpott, Ontario Minster of Health and Long-Term Care Eric Hoskins and Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler of Nishnawbe Aski Nation on an agreement to address urgent health needs in First Nations communities.

The Charter of Relationship Principles Governing Health System Transformation in NAN Territory was announced Monday afternoon in Ottawa.

"This is a positive step that will lead to a more comprehensive and effective prevention, response and recovery strategy for affected communities," said Acting Mayor Trevor Giertuga.

Also Monday, Ontario announced it is establishing a new Indigenous Youth and Community Wellness Secretariat to work closely with Indigenous partners, including Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the federal government to ensure efficient and effective coordination of efforts and resources.

The Secretariat will also work with partners to ensure Indigenous students who attend school away from their home communities this September feel safe.

"We share common objectives, and commit to working with all parties on the implementation," added Giertuga.
