Following Tuesday’s Provincial announcement that permits the opening of outdoor sports facilities, some City-run facilities will be opening to the public in the coming days.

City-run Golf Courses Open May 22

Chapples Golf Course and Strathcona Golf Course will be open beginning tomorrow, Friday, May 22. Prior to attending, players are being asked to read the new golf course rules and regulations posted at www.golfthunderbay.ca. Tee times can be booked online, or beginning Friday, May 22, by calling Chapples at 625-2582, or Strathcona at 683-8251.

Players are asked to arrive no earlier than 30 minutes prior to their scheduled tee time and to read posted signage upon arrival providing instruction on how to check-in and proceed with play.

Tennis Centre Reopens May 23

Effective Saturday, May 23, the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre will reopen to the public. Tennis will be permitted for singles and limited doubles play. Residents are reminded to use the facility only if they are healthy. Screening will be completed by staff prior to individuals entering the tennis facility.

The following Tennis Centre operational changes have been put in place for public safety:

  • Courts must be booked in advance by contacting the Centre directly at 577-1514
  • Bookings will be for one hour and can be made three days in advance
  • Memberships must be paid in advance via e-transfer or credit card
  • Doubles teams are limited to two players from the same household
  • Social distancing of two metres is required between individuals on the grounds (with the exception of individuals from the same household)
  • Washrooms will be available but there will be no access to water fountains – participants will need to bring their own water bottles
  • Clubhouse change rooms and showers will not be available – players will need to change into their gear prior to coming to the Centre

On-Street Parking Remains Free During Emergency Order

The Thunder Bay Parking Authority has extended its free on-street parking which permits two-hour free parking at metred spaces. This will remain in effect for the duration of the Provincial Emergency Order. The Order currently extends to June 2, but should it be extended longer, the free parking at metres will remain in place. Parkades and surface lots are not included. All other parking regulations are still in effect and enforceable.
