June 2, 2016 - The City's Curbside Battery Recycling Program returns on June 7, giving residents an opportunity to conveniently and safely recycle spent household batteries.
"This program has proven to be a very popular and successful one," said Jason Sherband, Manager - Solid Waste and Recycling Services. "Last spring, City workers collected 3.32 tonnes of batteries, which were shipped off and safely recycled. It's great to see residents embrace this program, and we're pleased to offer it again this spring."
Batteries can be placed in the orange battery recycling bags that were recently delivered to Thunder Bay households. City waste collection staff will pick up the bags at the curb during regular recycling days between June 7 - 17.
Any resident with curbside waste collection who did not receive an orange battery recycling bag, or who requires extras, is asked to call Dispatch at 625-2195 or visit thunderbay.ca/batteries to print out an insert that can be placed in any clear, re-sealable bag.
battery recycling bags are also available for pick-up at all four branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library, EcoSuperior (562 Red River Road) and the City of Thunder Bay Engineering Division (second floor, Victoriaville Civic Centre).
One hundred per cent of the battery components, along with the recycling bags themselves, will be recycled.
The City of Thunder Bay's first curbside battery collection program was offered in March 2014, and was the first such program offered in Northern Ontario. Since its inception, the program has diverted 21,340 pounds (10 metric tonnes) of household batteries from the City's Solid Waste & Recycling Facility.
