June 1, 2018 - The City's Curbside Battery Recycling Program returns on June 5, giving residents an opportunity to conveniently and safely recycle spent household batteries.

"This program has proven to be a very popular and successful one," said Jason Sherband, Manager - Solid Waste and Recycling Services. "Last spring, City workers collected a little over two metric tonnes of batteries, which were shipped off and safely recycled. It's great to see residents embrace this program, and we're pleased to offer it again this spring."

Batteries can be placed in the orange battery recycling bags that were recently delivered to Thunder Bay households. City waste collection staff will pick up the bags at the curb during regular recycling days between June 5-15.

Residents with curbside waste collection who did not receive an orange battery recycling bag, or who require extras, are asked to call Dispatch at 625-2195 or visit thunderbay.ca/batteries to print out an insert that can be placed in any clear, re-sealable bag.

One hundred per cent of the battery components, along with the recycling bags themselves, will be recycled.

The City of Thunder Bay's first curbside battery collection program was offered in March 2014, and was the first such program offered in Northern Ontario. Since its inception, the program has diverted 15 metric tonnes of household batteries from the City's Solid Waste & Recycling Facility.
