September 8, 2017 - The City of Thunder Bay, in partnership with Healthy Kids Community Challenge and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, are launching the new Fuel Shop Canteen at the Delaney Arena tomorrow, which offers healthier food and drink options for everyone to enjoy.
The Fuel Shop is a three-month pilot-project that makes healthier menu options available. Menu features include baked blueberry bannock, protein power balls, fresh fruit smoothies, wild rice and veggie soup, and hot chili. The goal of the project is to improve the health of children and their families in Thunder Bay by promoting and providing healthy food choices. Healthy Kids Community Challenge believes recreation centres should be positive examples of organizations that contribute to the health of our community. With strong community support, and increased consumer desire for healthy menu options, the hope is that this initiative will be expanded to other recreation centres throughout the City.
"Our city is working to support kids eating more vegetables and fruit by improving access and availability in places where kids eat, learn and play," said Councillor Frank Pullia - Child Advocate. "The new Fuel Stop Canteen will help make the healthier choice the easy choice for children and their families in our community."
"We all want our kids to grow-up healthy. Our current food environment, with readily available, heavily marketed foods makes it hard for families to eat healthy," said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health - Thunder Bay District Health Unit. "This exciting initiative aims to create healthy food environments in places where children go to be active."
Healthy Kids Community Challenge Thunder Bay will be celebrating the launch of the new Fuel Shop at the Delaney Arena, on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 12 - 1:30 pm. The celebration will feature a free public skate with the Healthy Kids' super-heroes, the unveiling of the new menu and tasty free-samples for all to enjoy.
