March 15, 2016 - Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is asking all residents to stay off any of the frozen bodies of water in the area. The recent increase in temperature is causing ice conditions to deteriorate and areas of open water are becoming visible.

"Water currents erode ice from underneath making it impossible to tell how thick it actually is," said Fire Chief John Hay. "Slippery shorelines and river banks should also be avoided. Attempting to go out on the ice at this point in the season would be a reckless choice."

Any accident involving submersion in icy cold water could cause hypothermia and paralysis within minutes and ultimately be fatal. Remind children to stay away from creeks, rivers and ditches.
