June 22, 2017 - EarthCare and the City of Thunder Bay were awarded the 2016 Minister's Award for Environmental Excellence, in recognition of their work on the Climate Adaptation Strategy.
The Award recognizes innovation in environmental excellence that fosters collective action between government, individuals, industry and business to achieve Ontario's environmental goals and priorities.
Councillor Andrew Foulds, Chair - EarthCare Advisory Committee, was on hand to receive the award which was presented yesterday at a private lunch with Hon Glen R. Murray, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, at Queens Park in Toronto.
"The Climate Adaptation Strategy clearly demonstrates the City of Thunder Bay and its resident's commitment to leading the province in building infrastructure that is climate ready for the 21st century," said Councillor Foulds.
The Climate Adaptation Strategy's development has had a strong collaborative approach, through the EarthCare Thunder Bay framework. Through proactive action, the City can achieve its climate adaptation goals and simultaneously realize a host of community benefits including economic development, community health and wellness, and the continued development of a sustainable and livable city. The goal of the strategy is to help the City prepare for, respond to, and recover from the potential impacts of climate change.
"I'm so excited that the City of Thunder Bay and EarthCare have been recognized for their excellence in working towards a climate ready City," said Mayor Keith Hobbs.
"This recognition is well deserved and I would like to congratulate everyone involved for their hard work and dedication to environmental sustainability," added Mayor Hobbs. "In addition to this great work, I am meeting with Minister Murray to talk Climate Adaptation, areas of concern in the North Harbor and other issues related to Thunder Bay and the Great Lakes."
