April 12, 2016 - The City of Thunder Bay's respect. Iniative, in partnership with Agnew H. Johnston Public School, kicked-off Everyone Matters Day, the global inclusiveness campaign, today in Thunder Bay. Everyone Matters Day encourages everyone to not judge or stereotype others, respect the humanity in everyone, and emphasize that everyone has the right to be who they are.
The Campaign was launched at Agnew H. Johnston Public School, with a Proclamation marking today as Everyone Matters Day in Thunder Bay. "Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect," said Mayor Keith Hobbs. "Every day should be Everyone Matters Day, but today is a reminder that we should celebrate diversity, individuality and respect for everyone in our community."
The students of Agnew H. Johnston Public School worked collectively to put together an Everyone Matters Tree. On a handprint, students wrote their name, and then placed them on a tree. They also completed an "˜I AM Sign,' which identifies a fact about themselves that they connect with. "It was a great opportunity for the students to showcase their individuality and embrace their differences," said Maureen Abbott, Principal - Agnew H. Johnston Public School. "This tree allowed a visual representation of our vibrant and diverse community."
Information on the City's respect. Iniative was also given to the students. "Creating a respectful community is everyone's responsibility and it begins with you & me," said Alison Bortolon, respect. Intern. "Every day we need to ask ourselves how we can be better members of the community where we live, learn, work and play."
The Campaign is also extended to all citizens through social media. Citizens are invited to take a selfie holding the #IAM Sign and fill in the blank space with a unique fact - something that you are proud of or something that makes you individually unique. Then, upload your selfie to Facebook and tag @respect.initiative and @cityofthunderbay and hashtag #everyonematters, and #respecttbay.
Everyone Matters Day launched in Fall 2012. This year, more than 60 Mayors across the globe have signed on to the Everyone Matters Day Campaign, affirming every residents' unique contribution to their community.
