Flags at Thunder Bay City Hall have been flown at half-mast since May 31 to honour the lives lost following the discoveries of unmarked and mass graves near former residential school sites in Kamloops, British Columbia and Cowessess First Nation, Saskatchewan.
Since then, additional discoveries of 182 graves in Cranbrook, British Columbia, and 160 graves discovered in Penelakut Island, formerly known as Kuper Island, near Chemainus, British Columbia have been identified. The flags will continue to be flown at half-mast until further notice
This is in memory of the thousands of children who were sent to residential schools, for those who never returned, and in honour of the families whose lives were forever changed.
