May 26, 2017 - Restore Week at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road will take place from Monday, May 29, to Saturday, June 3. During this special week, residents visiting the landfill can donate gently used building materials, appliances, cabinets, furniture, tools, plumbing and electrical materials to the Habitat for Humanity tent between 10 am - 4 pm. The tent will be located after the weigh scales, near the public drop-off bins.
"We are excited to continue our partnership with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore with this special, week-long collection," said Jason Sherband, Manager of Solid Waste & Recycling Services. "If you have a used item and don't make it out during the event, you can still drop it off to the ReStore at 660 Squier St."
This City of Thunder Bay and Habitat for Humanity partnership initiative will prevent reusable items from being buried at the landfill site. Dan Stezenko, CEO of Habitat for Humanity in Thunder Bay, anticipates a successful event. "Anyone crossing the weigh scales with a load will see our tent immediately. We encourage everyone to bring along their good used items, and ReStore volunteers will help to unload them."
This initiative supports the City's Solid Waste Management Strategy, which specifies forming community partnerships to reduce and reuse waste, wherever possible. Donating and shopping at the Habitat ReStore helps Habitat for Humanity build affordable homes in our community.
