October 16, 2015 -Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has begun its annual Home Fire Safety public education program. Firefighters will be going door to door in residential neighborhoods for the next month through Nov. 14. They will be emphasizing the legal requirements of working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

"It's simply unacceptable to not have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms," said Fire Chief John Hay.  "Working smoke alarms give you the valuable time needed to safely escape a fire emergency and only a carbon monoxide alarm can alert you to its deadly presence."

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds citizens to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms every month and to replace batteries at least once a year. Only working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives.

It is the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas.  Carbon monoxide alarms are required to be installed outside any sleeping area if your home has a fuel fired appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage.
