The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to reinstate the Intergenerational Programming that occurs between the residents of Pioneer Ridge Long Term Care and the Grace Remus Child Care Centre which operates on site.

“We are thrilled the residents of Pioneer Ridge and the children of Grace Remus Child Care will once again be reunited,” said Crystal Wark, Supervisor Therapeutic Recreation & Volunteers Services, Pioneer Ridge. “It’s been three long years since we have been together in person.”

On Friday June 9, 2023, the hallways and auditorium of Pioneer Ridge will once again be filled with the laughter of children. The Intergenerational Programming between Pioneer Ridge and Grace Remus include activities such as singing, playing games, dancing and crafting. This interaction has many positive impacts for all involved including bringing joy, supporting mental well-being, increasing activity levels, expanding learning opportunities, and instilling a sense of purpose and accomplishment. These benefits are even more impactful for residents experiencing dementia and other cognitive impairments.

“During the pandemic the only connective programming was through a window between the daycare and the home,” said Wark. “This week we did a trial run with a small group of toddlers walking down the main hallway of the home with their masks on. You could feel the joy in the air. Residents, children and staff were smiling, clapping and even brought to tears. We are grateful for this collaboration and the joy it brings to both parties.”
