The Civil Engineering Department at Lakehead University will be undertaking a study at the Edward & Redwood roundabout to assess an option to make roundabout crossings more accessible in the future.

City crews will work with Lakehead University on Thursday, Oct. 27 to install temporary rumble strips on the approaches and within the roundabout that will be on site for the day. The temporary rumble strips are made of PVC plastic and wood dowels secured with a special adhesive tape and have previously been tested on the Lakehead University campus.

It is expected that the temporary rumble strips will offer greater awareness to pedestrians by providing an audible warning of oncoming vehicles. The rumble strips should not impede vehicles and drivers are encouraged to proceed as usual through the roundabout so as not to skew the study results.

“The City is happy to support Lakehead University in their study to improve the accessibility of roundabouts,” said Kayla Dixon, Director of Engineering & Operations, “and we look forward to reviewing the results of the study.”

The rumble strips will be removed on Thursday afternoon.
