To mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the Thunder Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking hosted an information fair and BBQ this afternoon at Minnesota Park to raise awareness about human trafficking and what community resources are available to those affected by it.

“Unfortunately, human trafficking is a growing issue in our community, just as it is around the world,” said Kristal Carlson, Co-Chair – Thunder Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking. “The more we can do to raise awareness, the better we can do to prevent people falling prey to it, as well as helping those already impacted.”

Earlier this year, the Thunder Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking agreed to make 2019 a year to focus on a collective community response to human trafficking with more than 30 organizations contributing to offering a specialized service model for victims.

“Whether its labour trafficking or sex trafficking, we know Thunder Bay is one of the top six hubs in Ontario,” said Carlson. “And the province itself is a major centre for human trafficking with about two-thirds of reported cases in Canada happening in Ontario, so we are doing what we can to draw attention to this issue locally.”
