March 11, 2016 -Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, Tbaytel and the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Hockey Team have again joined forces to promote fire safety with the creation of fire safety hockey cards featuring this year's Thunderwolves team. Today at St Thomas Aquinas School members of the Thunderwolves Hockey Team joined Thunder Bay Fire Rescue in educating grade four students on home fire safety.
"Thunderwolves Hockey is a community-based team and working with Tbaytel and the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is a great opportunity for our organization. Having our players visit schools to help educate children about fire prevention is a win-win situation," said Lakehead Thunderwolves' Varsity Hockey Executive Director Jason Mallon. "Our players get to give back to the community and the kids enjoy receiving the fire safety hockey cards we distribute. Each player card has a different fire safety tip on it, so hopefully it will make learning about fire safety more fun for the students."
"The focus of the presentation is the importance of smoke alarms and home fire escape planning," said Anthony Stokaluk, Public Education Officer-Thunder Bay Fire Rescue. "Each student attending the presentation received the fire safety hockey cards and special take home assignments to work on with their families."
"Tbaytel is proud to be teaming up with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and the Lakehead Thunderwolves once again this year to help highlight the importance of educating our community about fire safety, prevention and preparedness," says Tbaytel president and CEO Dan Topatigh. "By bringing this message to the forefront, this partnership is helping to create a safer; more informed Thunder Bay for community members of all ages."
Thunderwolves players and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue have been visiting elementary schools all season. This year marks the third straight year of the partnership between Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, Tbaytel and the Lakehead University Thunderwolves Hockey Team.
