The City’s Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) held a special meeting today with community partners as part of its ongoing management of the COVID-19 situation. The focus was on the region’s vulnerable population and the recent outbreaks at the Thunder Bay Correctional Facility and the Thunder Bay District Jail.
“We invited additional, local partners from across the community to join the meeting today because we are all concerned with what could happen if there is a surge in COVID-19 within the vulnerable population in the city,” said Mayor Bill Mauro. “Coordinated planning for the community is critical, including oversight for the isolation shelter.”
The isolation shelter is designed to support individuals experiencing homelessness who may be at risk of or are COVID+ to have a safe space to isolate and reduce risk of spread within the emergency shelter system and the community at large. It is staffed with shelter workers 24hrs and supported by health care workers.
Those in attendance represented the City of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay Police Service, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, Superior North EMS, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Care Group, Thunder Bay District Health Unit, District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board, Vulnerable Populations Table, Shelter House, Salvation Army, Grace Place, NorWest Community Health Centres, Fort William First Nation, and representatives from the Solicitor General’s Office of Ontario.
