The 11th Annual Valentine’s Day Memorial Walk brought together families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls to acknowledge the families’ loss and support them in their grief, while also educating the public about this issue.

“Come walk with us today in memory of missing and murdered women and girls,” said Valentine’s Day Memorial Walk organizer and family member, Sharon Johnson.

Johnson’s own sister, 18- year-old Sandra Johnson, was found murdered on the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway on Feb. 13, 1992.

“Valentine’s Day is another day out of the year when we are reminded that our loved ones are no longer with us,” she said, noting that, while it is traditionally a day when people celebrate their love and affection, it represents loss for her for many years. “But in starting this walk, it was a way of turning the hurt into healing, of bringing families together to support one another to talk, to grieve, to heal and to share.”
