The Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) held its weekly virtual meeting today with various community partners as part of its ongoing management of the COVID-19 situation.

“Thank you for collaborating on the community response,” said Mayor Bill Mauro. “We need to stay strong and stay the course, or all of our efforts to contain the virus over the past weeks may be lost.”

The MECG received an update from the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janet DeMille, on efforts to contain spread of the virus, expanded testing with a focus on long term care homes and other vulnerable populations including persons who are homeless, and the current status including only one patient currently positive for COVID-19 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Those in attendance represented the City of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, Thunder Bay Police Service, Superior North EMS, District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board, tbaytel, Thunder Bay Airport, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Thunder Bay District Health Unit, Synergy North, Lakehead Public Schools, the Catholic District School Board, Lakehead University and Confederation College.

“We can be confident in our current situation that we have largely kept this virus under control in the city, however we are not out of the woods yet,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health.

“We are still in a challenging situation with this ongoing pandemic, and we must maintain our resolve and our vigilance with physical distancing and other measures, especially as we anticipate the relaxing of some of the significant public health measures that were put in place provincially.”
