Shane Muir has been appointed Chief of Superior North Emergency Medical Services for the City and District of Thunder Bay, effective December 19, 2022.
Commander Muir started his career as a paramedic with Superior North EMS in 2007. He was appointed Commander of EMS Operations (Acting) in May 2022. From 2020-2022 he was the Superintendent of Community Paramedicine and led the Superior North EMS COVID-19 Task Force.
“Shane Muir brings exemplary leadership and professional experience to the important role of overseeing our highly trained, professional emergency medical service,” said Karen Lewis, General Manager – Development & Emergency Services.
“I am committed to providing the best possible public service to the citizens of Thunder Bay, District communities and First Nations while supporting the paramedics of Superior North EMS,” said Commander Muir.
For his significant contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, Commander Muir recently received the 2020 Richard J. Armstrong Leadership Award for his outstanding leadership. The annual award recognizes an individual for both outstanding leadership and significant contributions to paramedicine in Ontario.
In addition to his experience as a front-line paramedic and as part of the EMS leadership team, he also has over a decade of leadership experience with the Canadian Forces.
Commander Muir was the successful candidate following an open competition.
About Superior North Emergency Medical Services (SNEMS)
SNEMS provides pre-hospital emergency care and community paramedicine programs to the citizens of Thunder Bay and 14 other municipalities as well as 14 First Nation communities throughout the Thunder Bay District. SNEMS operates out of 19 stations and responds to over 42,000 calls per year.
Superior North EMS employs approximately 230 people, (210 full- and part- time paramedics, and 20 leadership and administrative personnel) who deliver provincially mandated emergency medical services to approximately 169,000 people, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
