A group of paramedics from Superior North EMS are participating in a three-day training session from Dec. 17 – 19, preparing them to help their co-workers after exposure to a workplace critical incident.
With more than 200 employees, the task of maintaining staff wellness can be challenging, especially for paramedics working in the outlying district and remote stations.
“I feel very strongly about the health and wellness of my fellow paramedics,” said Jonathan Woodbeck, Health, Wellness and Peer Support Coordinator, Superior North EMS. “This training is the first step towards creating a network of peer supporters ready to help fellow paramedics get through incidents that we know will occur.”
Frontline paramedics, as well as some Superior North EMS leadership team members who were chosen by their peers, are taking this training in preparation for their roles as peer supporters.
“We recognize that our paramedics will continue to be exposed to critical incidents due to the nature of the job, so it is imperative that we provide them with resources to help them cope,” said Andrew Dillon, Deputy Chief, Superior North EMS.
