Following public engagement in the summer and fall of 2019 on the design of a renewed play area at Centennial Park, the City’s Parks & Open Spaces Section will begin removing the older equipment starting this week.
“We are excited to begin the process of renewing and improving the Play Area,” said Cory Halvorsen, Manager of the City’s Parks & Open Spaces Section. “However, we want to let the public know that because of the delays imposed by COVID-19, construction of the new Adventure Playground will now take place in 2021.”
The existing Play Area’s train, car and swing set will remain open for use this season, but will eventually be removed to make way for the Adventure Playground. During the public engagement, questions were asked on playground themes, materials, colour schemes, and whether to separate age groups and park amenities.
“Most respondents preferred the look and feel of wood structures,” said Werner Schwar, Supervisor of Parks & Open Spaces Planning. “Also, a Woodland Adventure theme was identified as a favourite by residents, who felt it suited Centennial Park’s treed setting.”
This feedback and other details from the public engagement will be included in a Request for Proposals for design/build of the Adventure Playground scheduled for construction in the summer of 2021.
