Installation of Pride crosswalks began at two intersections: the first at the intersection of Bay Street and Algoma Street, and the second at the intersection of Donald Street and May Street.

The crosswalk painting will necessitate partial road closures at each location until work is complete.

Algoma Street will be closed beginning Thursday, Aug. 20 from Cornwall Avenue to Dufferin Street with local traffic access only. Bay Street traffic may proceed straight through the intersection; however, north and south turning may be interrupted. Motorists are asked to use Court Street as an alternate route and are asked to drive with caution. Detours will change as the work proceeds – please follow signage. Painting of the rainbow and transgender crosswalks at this intersection is expected to be complete on Friday, Aug. 21.

Painting of a second rainbow crosswalk at Donald and May Streets will take place on Friday, Aug. 21. Donald Street from Brodie Street to May Street will be closed for one day.

The rainbow crosswalks have been made possible with funding and in-kind support from Thunder Pride and North-West Lines Ltd. “The City is happy to be working with Thunder Pride and North-West Lines to install the City’s Rainbow Crosswalks, and we ask the public to have patience driving in the areas during the installation,” said Kayla Dixon, City of Thunder Bay’s Director of Engineering & Operations.

Thunder Pride is planning a rainbow crosswalk dedication ceremony with details to be announced.
