April 8, 2016 - Sections of Cumberland Street will close to northbound traffic starting on Tuesday, April 12 to allow for various improvements including asphalt reconstruction, watermain replacement, boulevard landscaping, and installation of a new storm sewer and street lighting.

While site preparation work will begin on April 11, traffic access to Cumberland Street will remain unrestricted until the following day, April 12. Extending from Stephens Street to Gibson Avenue, the project is scheduled to be completed over the course of five stages:

  • Stage 1 will affect Stephens Street to Clavet Street. Closures are expected to be in effect from April 12 to June 8.
  • Stage 2 will affect Clavet Street to McCulloch Street. Closures are expected to be in effect from June 9 to July 26.
  • Stage 3 will affect McCulloch Street to MacDougall Street. Closures are expected to be in effect from July 27 to September 8.
  • Stage 4 will affect MacDougall Street to Gibson Avenue. Closures are expected to be in effect from September 9 to October 24.
  • Stage 5 will affect Stephens Street to Gibson Avenue. Closures are expected to be in effect from October 24 to October 28. This is the final stage during which paving, landscaping, and line painting will be completed.

During each stage, traffic will be permitted in one lane only heading southbound on Cumberland Street. Northbound traffic will be required to follow the posted detour. Once a stage is complete, two-way traffic will be restored.
The construction schedule is subject to change, as various factors - such as weather - can have an impact on project timelines.

Pedestrians will continue to have access to the area and businesses will remain open throughout the duration of the project. Those travelling in the area are asked to use extra caution and obey all posted signage.
