The City is asking residents to share their views in an online survey regarding the 2018 Pop-Up Patio Pilot, a project that allowed local businesses to build temporary, seasonal patios and seating areas using sidewalks and on-street parking spaces.

This pilot was requested by businesses within the Business Improvement Areas (BIA) and Business Association (BA) areas who believed the establishment of pop-up patios would contribute to the attractiveness and vibrancy of the areas, attracting additional visitors and increased spending.

“We were approached by several interested businesses in our organized districts who were interested in building patios in front of their businesses,” said Joel DePeuter, Manager of Realty Services.

“Our goal was to create pedestrian-friendly environments and welcoming street atmospheres, where any operational impacts, risk and liability to the City can be managed.”

“Patios are something that people really enjoy during the summer months,” said Jason Mackenzie, Apple Chipotles.

“In our opinion, it’s a great program for Thunder Bay restaurants, and we are very appreciative of the opportunity to participate.”
