In anticipation of next week’s work to raise and move the James Whalen tug, contractors will begin moving equipment and preparing the site today at Kaministiquia River Heritage Park.
In early May, the tug took on water and sank.
The pedestrian underpass at Donald Street will be closed to accommodate the equipment and recovery operations. Fencing is also going up in the park to keep onlookers at a safe distance.
“Our main concern with this operation is public safety,” said Cory Halvorsen, Manager of Parks and Open Spaces. “We realize some residents will be interested to see this work, but we ask everyone to keep safety in mind and not crowd the site. Please also exercise caution on roadways where equipment may be moving.”
He added that the next steps will be determined once the condition of the boat can be assessed.
