Fire Prevention week kicks off on Sunday, October 6, with Thunder Bay Fire Rescue holding events to connect with the public and remind them about fire safety.

TBFR is proud to partner with local author Jean E. Pendziwol, author of No Dragons for Tea, a book promoting fire safety which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Pendziwol will do several readings, emphasizing the importance of fire safety.

The book was originally published with the support and involvement of Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, after Pendziwol wanted to help alleviate her daughter’s fear of fire and fire alarms. The book was originally launched at Station Three in 1999 and has helped children around the world learn about fire safety, and what to do in the event of a fire.

Pendziwol will be part of an event with students at McKellar Park School during Fire Prevention Week and will also be at an Open House at Station One (330 Vickers St N.) on Saturday, October 12. The public is invited to the event at Station One from 1-3 p.m.

The Open House will include book readings, free Dragon’s Fire Safety Rhyme posters, fire extinguisher demonstrations, truck tours and information booths.

“Fire safety is important every day of the year, but this week gives us a chance to focus on why it is so important to prevent fires, but also how to react in case of an emergency,” said Kevin Anderson, Acting Division Chief of Fire Prevention, Education and Investigation.

This year’s theme is Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You! Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds homeowners, tenants and landlords that having a working smoke alarm on each floor of a home, and outside of all sleeping areas.
