November 6, 2017 - Thunder Bay Fire Rescue received a $5000 donation of combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms today from Union Gas for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue's SAFE program (Smoke/CO Alarms For Everyone). The SAFE program is an assistance-based program geared towards local home owners that require assistance with the acquisition or installation of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue's SAFE program assists homeowners who have financial or physical barriers to ensuring their homes are compliant with Ontario Fire Code.  The SAFE program was originally launched in 2015 and this is the third year in a row that Union Gas has donated to the program.

"The SAFE program allows us to help homeowners that require assistance in meeting Ontario Fire Code regulations for smoke and CO alarms," said Fire Chief John Hay. "Smoke alarms provide the early warning needed to safely escape a fire and only a CO alarm can alert you to the presence of CO."

"At Union Gas, the safety of our employees and our communities is our most important core company value," said John Gould, utility services manager, Union Gas. "And we share that commitment by supporting much-needed programs like SAFE that helps us all stay safer. Smoke and CO alarms are a crucial element for the fire service in saving lives."

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents it's the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside all sleeping areas for homes that have a fuel fired appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage.
