Treaties Recognition Week is held across the province from Nov. 1 – 7, to recognize the importance of treaties and bring awareness to the treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in the province of Ontario.

“Treaty Recognition Week provides us with an important opportunity on our journey of healing and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples,” said Mayor Bill Mauro. “We can use this week to educate ourselves on the treaties that were signed with Indigenous peoples; and I encourage everyone to access the virtual events to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the treaty relationship and the contributions made by Indigenous peoples to our city.”

Residents are encouraged to join in the week of activities which present opportunities for learning and reflection on an important part of Canada’s history and to continue to honour existing treaty relationships. Residents are also encouraged to promote Treaties Recognition Week through their online channels using the hashtag #TreatyON.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, to mark Treaties Recognition Week for the City of Thunder Bay, a plaque will be permanently installed in the lobby of City Hall recognizing the Robinson-Superior Treaty. The plaque reflects the City of Thunder Bay’s commitment in continuing to foster respectful relations and work with Indigenous partners, promoting a better future for everyone in the city.

Visit www.thunderbay.ca/treatiesweek for more information on Treaties Recognition Week virtual events which include films, speakers, virtual learning, and a living library.
