The City of Thunder Bay is honoured to receive a Silver Bicycle Friendly Community Award from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition (STR) and its partner, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) for providing citizens with extensive bike lane and multi-use trails to encourage active, healthier living.
“I’m proud that our City has been recognized as a bicycle friendly city. Cycling not only helps people maintain an active lifestyle, but it can go a long way towards reducing GHG emissions. Thank you to those members of City Administration, along with those from the cycling Community, who have brought us to where we are today. I encourage our citizens to consider exploring the many bike routes available,” says Mayor Bill Mauro.
The Awards are based on a community’s commitment to being a bicycle friendly place with opportunities and options to cycle for all ages. STR works to support, educate and encourage communities to reap the many benefits of cycling. The organization assesses bicycle-friendliness using the ‘four E’s’: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, and Evaluation/Planning.
“This award is a great affirmation of the work undertaken to improve our network and the experience of those who use it,” says Darrik Smith, the City’s Mobility Coordinator. “As we continue moving forward with our Active Transportation Plan and building on improvements, we thank all those who have helped make Thunder Bay a more mobile place.”
